On Monday September 17th, 1849 - the Loyalists and Reformists rioted in what is now known as the Byward Market. At day's end, 30 people had been wounded and one man killed.
Armed with cannons, muskets and pistols, the quarrel was set to continue on Sappers' Bridge over the Rideau Canal, but the military arrived in time to defuse the situation.
