It’s back!  One of our top hits from last year… our Hefeweizen!

Since he joined Kichesippi, our Brewmaster Don “Dr. Malt” Harms has been telling us that he makes a great Weissbier, so we finally gave him the go ahead.  If we’re being honest, the Hefeweizen was long overdue.  In 1989, Don began his apprenticeship as a brewer in Germany where he specialized in brewing Weissbier.   He got to work perfecting a recipe that would be a true reflection of this internationally known and loved wheat beer (weissbier).  The result was a crazy delicious and refreshing brew.  It was so popular we knew it would be back for year 2, and this beer also won the Hefeweizen silver medal at the Ontario Brewing Awards last night.

Our unfiltered Hefeweizen pours a cloudy straw colour.  True to the style, notes of banana and clove can be detected in this tasty beer!

What the heck is a Hefeweizen?!

Hefe= “yeast” and weizen = “wheat”.  Very simply put a hefeweizen is a yeasty wheat beer!  The yeast is top fermented which makes it an ale.

The style originated in Germany and can be distinguished by the cloudy pour (yeast is not filtered out of the beer), low hop bitterness and clove and banana flavours.  Lower hop bitterness is often paired with higher carbonation to help balance the beer’s malty sweetness.

Hefeweizen may also be referred to as “Weissbier” which translates to “white beer”.   This style existed before the creation of lagers or pale ales.  It received the name Weissbier as it was significantly lighter in colour than the majority of German beers at the time.

For now our Hefeweizen is only available at the brewery retail store (866 Campbell Ave.) and a few local restaurants.  However, it will also be available in select LCBO stores for the summer!  Make sure to grab a few cans and enjoy this fantastic summer brew- cheers!

Our third example of West Coast IPA continues Kichesippi's series of classic, true-to-style India Pale Ales.  Remic Rapids is one of the Kichesippi's (Ottawa River) hidden gems.  Here, every spring and summer, an Ottawa artist balances dozens of river rocks into elegant sculptures, and that describes this IPA perfectly, balanced and elegant.

Kichesippi Beer is looking for occasional Event Staff to join our team! 

Role to start immediately.

Must have valid drivers license with access to a reliable vehicle and be Smart Serve certified. 

Must be available evenings and weekends. 

Primary roles and responsibilities include (but not limited to):

- Communicate with event coordinator/sales representative
- Collect beer/materials needed for event at brewery
- Efficient set up and tear down of events
- Able to lift 50 pounds
- Comfortable operating a cargo van
- Able to work independently and with others
- Comfortable engaging with large groups
- Comfortable in fast paced, high presssure enviroments 
- Promote Kichesippi and Harvey and Vern's brand

See the worlds of Ottawa street fashion and figurative sculpture collide as we bring you 'YOW mini', an art exhibit of epically small proportions. Local sculpture artist Maria Saracino (@mariasaracinoca) and Katie Hession of YOW City Style (@yowcitystyle) have brought their two passions together for an exhibit of one-foot tall sculptures made by Maria based on photos taken by Katie who is also celebrating the one-year birthday of her blog.

Our latest Staff pick was chosen by Meg Brennan, who grew up in Nova Scotia across the street from the Dartmouth Common. Dampfbier (German for steam beer), is a now rare, centuries-old style, and was traditionally known as the beer for the common folk.  Brewed with German weizen yeast, this all malt brew has hints of clove and a mild hop finish.

Dartmouth Common is available in Growler a tour retails store with a limited run of cans available Friday February 12th.

You can also find this brew available on tap at the following fine establishments: The Grand Pizzeria, Sir John A, 10fourteen, Standard Luxury Tavern, Pub Italia, Play Food and Wine, Lieutenants Pump, Johnny Farina's, Atomic Rooster, Gezellig, Woody's, Carben and Brothers Beer Bistro. 

On January 17^th and 24^th we invited our good friends from Bier Markt Ottawa to the brewery for some Sunday night beer education and all around Kichesippi-fuelled revelry.

The night included a detailed tour of our nearly 6-year-old brewery alongside a tutored tasting of all 4 currently available Kichesippi brews. After that, we opened up the taps, let the beer flow, and the amazing duo of Tony and Colin rocked us into the night and kicked off a stellar brewery dance party!
